Wall Street Terms: Buying and Selling Stocks

Although many more terms exist in the world of Wall Street, we will only list the most common and necessary terms to begin trading stocks without overwhelming beginners.


Ask: The lowest price at which someone is willing to sell a stock. (Buy price of a stock)

At-The-Money: The price of the stock equals the strike price of the option.

Bid: The highest price a buyer is willing to pay for a stock. (Sell price of a stock)

Broker: A registered investment advisor (Link between investor and stock market)

Call Option: Option that gives the right to buy a fixed amount of a certain stock at a specified price within a specified time. (Purchase when you expect the stock to rise)

Commission: The fee a broker charges to fulfill a buy or sell order.

Day Order: An order that is valid only for the day it is placed.
