Major Market Index

A major market index is a group of select stocks that represent a particular sector of the stock market. Some common indices that you have probably heard of are the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ), and the Standard and Poor's 500 (S&P 500).

These indices are the most common indicators of stock market movement in the US. If you were to look at stock market news on television or in a newspaper, the value of the market would likely be displayed using the DJIA for industrial stocks and the NASDAQ for technological stocks.
